The Iowa Veteran's Information Project was started in the early 1990s as
a way to inform newly discharged veterans of their rights and of the educational
opportunities in Iowa. IMECC receives a quarterly listing of all persons
discharged from the military services who have declared Iowa as their home
of record. The staff of the Iowa Department of Education then sends each
veteran an information packet. The information packet includes:
- a letter from Iowa's Governor thanking the veteran for his/her service
to America and to the people of Iowa,
- information on veterans re-employment rights,
- information on Iowa's public and private four-year colleges and universities,
- information on Iowa's community colleges,
- information on the Montgomery GI Bill,
- information on opportunities within the Iowa National Guard and military
reserve components, and
- a response card that can be used by the veteran to request additional information
on any of the topics contained in the packet.
The returned response cards are received by Iowa Department of Education
staff, who collect and disseminate the requests to the appropriate agencies.
As of 2006, several thousand such packets had been sent out to Iowa's returning
veterans.
If you know of a former Iowan who would like to recieve one of our information packets, please contact the Webmaster.
